Description
PEC CLASS • ONLINE SAFETY TRAINING
H₂S awareness for the work you do
Learn to recognize hydrogen sulfide hazards, understand gas alarms and make safer decisions around oil-and-gas operations.
Approximately 60 minutes | Self-paced online | 10 modules
$24.99 excluding tax
One learner • Online training • No live Zoom session required
Final assessment: 75% to pass. Three total attempts (one initial attempt and two retries). A downloadable one-page H₂S workbook is included after registration.
Awareness-level training. This course is NOT PEC H₂S Clear.
Recognize the hazard
Understand where H₂S can occur and why color, smell and appearance cannot confirm an area is safe.
Understand your monitor
Learn breathing-zone placement, alarm awareness and the limits of common gas sensors.
Know when to leave
Review evacuation, wind direction and the boundaries of safe emergency response.
About this course
Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a colorless, highly toxic and flammable gas. It can collect in low-lying or poorly ventilated areas. A rotten-egg odor may occur at low concentrations, but smell cannot be trusted to detect H₂S.
This course builds practical hazard awareness through short screens, visual interactions, knowledge checks and oilfield work scenarios. It covers production areas, tanks, production water, transport activities and flare-related hazards.
Who should take it?
Oil-and-gas employees, contractors, field crews, supervisors, maintenance workers and drivers who need introductory H₂S awareness. Examples apply across oilfield roles; this is not a driver-only course.
What you will learn
- Recognize common H₂S sources, accumulation areas and exposure hazards.
- Explain why smell is unreliable and why gas detection matters.
- Identify proper personal monitor placement and understand what gases a monitor detects.
- Recognize flare-related sulfur dioxide (SO₂) hazards and sensor limitations.
- Describe leaving an alarm area, moving crosswind and then upwind, and following site emergency procedures.
- Recognize why rescue and respiratory protection require separate training and authorization.
Course outline
Ten short modules take you from basic awareness to practical decisions and a final assessment.
- Welcome & H₂S Awareness — Course scope and essential gas properties.
- What Is H₂S and Where Is It Found? — Natural sources and oilfield exposure areas.
- Exposure & Health Effects — How exposure can affect the body.
- Recognizing and Controlling H₂S Hazards — Hazard awareness and site controls.
- Detection, Personal Monitors & Alarms — Placement, sensors and alarm response.
- Flare Stacks, H₂S and Sulfur Dioxide Awareness — Additional toxic-gas hazards.
- Escape, Respiratory Protection & Rescue Awareness — Escape decisions and training boundaries.
- Oilfield Work Scenarios — Apply awareness across field roles.
- Final Review — Revisit the key safety messages.
- Final Assessment — Check your understanding.

Frequently asked questions
Is this PEC H₂S Clear?
No. This is a shorter awareness-level course. It does not provide PEC H₂S Clear training or credentials. If your employer requires H₂S Clear, choose that course.
Do I need to attend a scheduled class?
No. This training is online and self-paced. No live Zoom session is required.
Is it only for truck drivers?
No. It is designed for workers across oil-and-gas roles, including field crews, contractors, supervisors and drivers.
Does it qualify me to use a respirator or perform rescue?
No. Respiratory protection requires separate medical clearance, fit testing and hands-on training. Never attempt an H₂S rescue unless trained, properly equipped and authorized. This course also does not qualify you for confined-space entry.
Will my employer accept this course?
Confirm your employer's and site's requirements before registering. Site-specific rules, alarms, procedures and employer requirements always apply. This awareness course does not replace required job-specific or hands-on training.
Are there questions or a final assessment?
Yes. Knowledge checks reinforce the lessons. The final assessment requires 75% to pass. You receive three total attempts: one initial attempt and two retries. If you use all three attempts without passing, contact PEC Class to discuss next steps.
Where can I review purchase terms?
Review the PEC Class cancellation and refund terms before purchasing.
Important course scope
